Problem

Many working people earn an income but still struggle to meet basic needs such as food, housing, transportation, healthcare, education, and utilities. This research seeks to understand the factors behind this gap between employment and household financial security.

Why the problem matters

When people work but cannot meet basic needs, household wellbeing, productivity, financial stability, and economic participation can suffer. Understanding the causes can help decision-makers develop more effective responses.

Project description

This research examines why many workers continue to struggle to meet basic household needs despite having employment. It will investigate income levels, household expenses, employment conditions, working hours, job security, debt, dependants, access to essential services, and differences across occupations and locations. The study will combine existing data with evidence gathered from workers and households to identify the main factors driving financial pressure and determine where practical interventions may be possible.

Geographic focus

Ghana — with selected urban, peri-urban, and rural communities.
